Today, CertiStay is available in vacation rental destinations across North America

We are recognised as the pioneer of third party safety and security auditing for short-term rentals, working with property managers, homeowners, community leaders and associations to ensure that the industry prioritizes guest safety over profits to the benefit of everyone.

In the USA alone there is a 26% year-on-year growth in vacation and short-term rentals, with an estimated 38.4m guests being served by 2023.

The boom in short-term rentals is not surprising. Staying in an individual property with its own facilities is very appealing to today’s modern traveler. What is surprising however, is that even today, the current regulations for short-term rentals are confusing and inconsistent. There has been little effort in place to ensure properties meet the safety and security standards that are on par with the current standards for hotels and BnBs.

Until now that is….

In late 2015, successful vacation rental property manager, Wolf Wörster came to realize that creating a safety and security certification process for vacation and short-term rentals, that was globally recognised as the standard, was not only the competitive advantage he needed as a luxury vacation rental manager, but an absolute necessity for his homeowners, their guests, and community leaders.

Even with his small portfolio of very high-end homes, things were not perfect on the safety front. Unfortunate incidents including falls, burns and even fatalities had occurred. This spurred Wolf on to bring together a team of safety and security experts, including police and fire chiefs, an insurance underwriter and analyst, senior vacation rental industry professionals and government leaders to develop CertiStay.

During a three year process, the dedicated certification process was developed, backed up be a proprietary software tool and a national workforce of trained auditors, in order to bring to the short-term rental industry a global standard where guests can “sleep well at night” knowing their accommodation is safe and secure and that homeowners and property managers limit their liability and ensure best possible practice.

Along the journey, CertiStay has attracted a leadership team of highly experienced and high calibre short-term rental professionals including Terry Jones, the founder of Travelocity and the founding chairman of KAYAK, and Randy Bacik, former owner of one of North America’s largest Vacation Rental Management Companies with over 2,200 properties under exclusive management.
